A Success of Commitment and Joy: The 2025 Italian FIRST LEGO League Final in Genoa

On March 22–23, 2025, the Conference Center at the Magazzini del Cotone in Genoa hosted the National Final of the 2025 FIRST LEGO League, an event that brought together over around 500 students from all over Italy. Organized for the first time at the national level by Scuola di Robotica, the event was a meaningful occasion for Italy’s educational and technological communities.

This year’s theme, “SUBMERGED,” inspired teams to explore ocean depths through robotics challenges and innovative research projects. Each team participated in three Robo Game matches and jury sessions, showcasing both technical skills and a strong sense of teamwork.

In addition to the competition, participants had the chance to experience Genoa’s rich maritime culture and science. A boat tour of the Port of Genoa offered a unique perspective on the city’s historic harbor, while a visit to the Genoa Aquarium allowed students to deepen their understanding of marine ecosystems—perfectly in line with the “SUBMERGED” theme.

The National Final crowned the team FLL 016 Mi Collego as Champion, earning them an invitation to represent Italy at the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas, USA, from April 16 to 19, 2025. This prestigious international event brings together teams from around the world to celebrate the accomplishments of the “SUBMERGED” season.

Several other Italian teams were also selected to take part in international events:

FLL 001 BOTtegai: Asia Pacific Open Championship, Sydney, Australia, July 3–6, 2025
FLL 075 Steampower: Open Africa Championship, Cape Town, South Africa, May 7–9, 2025
FLL 055 Plank Team: Open International Championship, Korinthos, Greece, May 2–4, 2025
FLL 020 Montagnana for Robotics: Western Edge Open, Long Beach, California, USA, May 30 – June 1, 2025
FLL 078 Gome Neve: WPI Open Invitational, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, June 13–15, 2025
FLL 015 GensVolta: Florida Sunshine Invitational, Daytona Beach, Florida, USA, June 24–28, 2025

The FIRST LEGO League Italy season will continue in April with the launch of the Explore and Discover categories—programs designed to introduce young children to science and technology through play and creativity. These initiatives will complete the educational journey that began with the Challenge and mark the conclusion of the 2024–25 season.

The success of the Genoa event—made possible by the combined efforts of organizers, coaches, students, volunteers, schools, and families—confirms the value of educational robotics as a tool to inspire new generations. FIRST LEGO League is steadily affirming itself as a true training ground for the future.
