EEE-RAS Award to our work on humanoid robots

The paper presented at the International Conference on Humanoids Robots of the IEEE Robotics&Automation Society, which took place in Nancy, France, from 22 to 24 November 2024 was awarded ‘Best Interactive Presentation’. Congratulations to Michela Bogliolo, Francesco Burlando, Andrea Germinario, Francesco Vallone, Alberto Pilotto and Emanuele Micheli.

The work is linked to the RO.SA project (RObot-assisted treatment of elderly people’s sarcopenia by means of physical exercise) carried out at the Galliera Hospital of Genoa by the School of Robotics of Genoa and MadLab 2.0, in collaboration with Prof. Alberto Pilotto and Prof. Francesco Vallone, respectively Director of the Department of Geriatric Care, Orthogeriatrics and Rehabilitation (CU.RO.GE.) and Director of the S.C. Recovery and Functional Rehabilitation of E.O. Ospedali Galliera.

Below is a brief description of the RO.SA project.

Sarcopenia is a clinical condition characterised by loss of muscle mass and strength associated with reduced functional motor skills. Treatment of this condition involves nutritional interventions (diet with adequate protein, antioxidants and specific vitamin factors) and exercise. The RO.SA project aims to develop an innovative method of treating sarcopenia using a humanoid robot capable of guiding patients through a series of specific physical exercises. It is aimed at a population of outpatients aged ≥ 65 years, suffering from sarcopenia (according to the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia of Older People version 2 – EWGSOP-2 2018) who have been prescribed physical activity.
