Italian Robotics Championships 2024/2025. Ocean Edition

The Italian initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Education and Merit, as part of the Robotics Championships project, aims to enhance students’ scientific and technical skills and their commitment to environmental challenges. It is organised by the School of Robotics in collaboration with the Citizen Science Guardians of the Coast project. Applications must be received by 18 April 2025.

The 2025 edition is organised in collaboration with the Citizen Science Guardians of the Coast project, and has as its main sponsor the Costa Crociere Foundation, which has always been active in raising awareness among young people on the protection of marine ecosystems.

The competition aims to involve male and female students in educational robotics and environmental monitoring activities for the protection of the sea and coastlines, combining technology, science and active citizenship. The event will be organised by the Scuola di Robotica staff.

Secondary schools from all over Italy can participate. Each team must be composed of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 20 students (classes can participate, but in case of selection, 3 students and a teacher can participate in the event), coordinated by a tutor teacher.

Participation will take place in two phases.

Phase 1 – Registration and citizen science activities By 18 April 2025, teams will have to: register on the official platform of the Guardians of the Coast project: www.guardianidellacosta.it; complete at least one citizen science mission among those proposed (coastal surveys, species monitoring, waste observation, etc.).

Phase 2 – Development and upload of the robotic project Teams will have to design and implement a robotic or technological prototype (even with simple platforms or digital simulations) aimed at 1. Environmental monitoring of the sea and coastline. 2. Protecting marine biodiversity 3. Data collection and pollution prevention.

The project may be developed with any technology (hardware and/or software), as long as it is accompanied by multimedia documentation to be uploaded onto the dedicated platform. Prototypes must not exceed a total size of 60cm x 40cm due to restrictions on boarding for the possible national final. Furthermore, for the same reasons, it will not be possible to board the following materials: https://www.costacrociere.it/link-utili/articoli-proibiti-bordo.html.

Each team must upload the following by 10 May 2025: 1. A video presentation of the project (max. 3 minutes), 2. A technical sheet (.pdf) with a description of the objective, tools used, code (if present) and a link to the citizen science activities carried out 3. Any photos, links to GitHub repositories, simulations or other materials useful for the evaluation.

Final event – Ocean Day

The selected teams will be invited to present their project on board the Costa Smeralda ship in Genoa on 6 June 2025, on the occasion of World Ocean Day. It will be a moment of confrontation, public exhibition and award ceremony for the best projects.
