Stop Killer Robots: meeting of government experts on lethal autonomous weapons in August 2024

The meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) (the governmental experts of states interested in discussing a convention on emerging technologies in the area of Lethal Autonomous Weapon systems) will be held at the United Nations building in Geneva from 26 to 30 August 2024.

The incredible and tragic increase in the use of autonomous weapons especially in the war in Ukraine and the war in Gaza has motivated the call by many organisations, which are part of the Stop Killer Robots Campaign, to reopen discussions on the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). This Convention is also related to the respect of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), since most of the victims (dead and wounded) of autonomous weapons are civilians, often children.

Even more worrying is the increasing ‘militarisation of Artificial Intelligence’, the use of AI algorithms for facial recognition, biometric identification, surveillance.

A delegation of activists from Stop Killer Robots will attend in person to ensure that the association is represented in the courtroom.

For a status of the discussions see a summary by L. Bruun of SIPRI Sweden.

Remote participation
The GGE (Group of Governmental Experts) meeting will be live-streamed on UN Web TV to allow delegations and activists to follow the proceedings remotely in real time. There is no need to register to watch the online streaming – it will be accessible to everyone, just visit the UN TV webpage to access it.
